Google AI Plus vs AI Pro: which Gemini plan do you need?

In Germany Google AI Plus costs 4.99 euros a month and Google AI Pro 21.99 euros (as of October 2026). Plus brings 400 GB of storage, twice the free usage limits, Gemini in Gmail and video generation, but probably from mid-November it will only include the fast Flash models. Pro offers the strongest models such as Gemini 4 Argon, four times the free limits, Gemini in Docs and Sheets and 5 TB of storage. Both can be shared with up to five other people. Google's agent Task, formerly Gemini Spark, cannot be used in the EU with either plan.

Choose Google AI Pro if you analyse long documents or need the strongest models such as Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini in Docs and more video credits. Agents such as Task cannot be used in the EU with either plan.

Prices and storage (as of October 2026)

Google AI Plus: On its German plans page Google lists 4.99 euros a month with 400 GB of cloud storage. The same page shows a second Plus option with 2 TB for 9.99 euros a month. According to Google's help pages, Plus comes as a monthly or annual plan; the plans page does not state the annual price.

Google AI Pro: 21.99 euros a month with 5 TB of storage. According to Google's help pages, some Pro options come with 10 TB, but the German plans page gives no price for that. Pro also includes Google Home Premium Standard, Google Health Premium (only usable with a Fitbit or Pixel Watch), YouTube Premium Lite (depending on the country) and, for developers, 10 dollars of Google Cloud credit a month.

On both plans the storage covers Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. If you already pay for a Google One storage plan, Google's help pages say you switch to the new plan instead of paying on top. According to Google, both plans can be cancelled at any time. What counts in the end is the amount shown at checkout.

According to Google, Google AI Plus is available in more than 160 countries, and Germany is explicitly on the list. The plans are only for personal Google accounts, not for business accounts with Google Workspace.

Models and usage limits

Gemini is Google's AI assistant. Which models, meaning the AI programs behind it, you can use depends on your plan.

Plus: Google names the fast model Gemini 3.6 Flash. Google introduced it for everyone in July 2026, but since 9 October Gemini picks the model automatically for people without a plan, mostly the smallest model, Flash-Lite. Until now, Plus subscribers could also pick the stronger Pro models. That is changing: According to Google's help pages, Plus will only include Flash-Lite and Flash, and Google announces the date by email. According to 9to5Google and Android Authority, one such email that users shared on Reddit names 13 November 2026. Google has not confirmed this date publicly, and it is unclear whether it applies in every country.

Pro: Access to Gemini 3.1 Pro and to the new top model Gemini 4 Argon, which Google introduced for Pro and Ultra subscribers on 13 October 2026. According to the plans page, Argon is not included in Plus.

Usage limits: According to Google, Plus has twice the limits of the free version and Pro four times. The limits depend on computing effort: long chats, large files, Deep Research and videos use more. Your allowance refills every five hours until you reach a weekly limit. After that you can keep chatting with the smallest model, Flash-Lite. Google reserves the right to change limits without notice.

How much text Gemini can read at once, the so-called context window, differs a lot: According to Google, Plus handles 128,000 tokens and Pro one million. According to Google, one million tokens equal roughly 1,500 pages of text. For long PDFs, contracts or reports, Pro therefore has a clear advantage.

Deep Research, Gemini Notebook, images and videos

Deep Research, the detailed web research that ends in a report, is available on both plans according to Google, and even in the free version. With a plan you get more allowance; without one, Google says Deep Research may be unavailable at times of high demand. According to Google, the feature is only for people aged 18 and over.

Gemini Notebook is the former NotebookLM; Google renamed it in July 2026. You upload your own documents and have it create summaries, flashcards or audio overviews from them. According to Google, a notebook holds up to 100 sources with Plus and up to 300 with Pro, and Pro has higher limits for the individual features.

Images: According to Google, both plans can create and edit images with Nano Banana Pro. Videos: Both generate videos with the Gemini Omni Flash model, the free version does not. In the creative studio Google Flow you get 200 credits a month with Plus and 1,000 with Pro. If you generate videos regularly, you will hit the limits of Plus much sooner. According to Google, Flow is only for people aged 18 and over.

Coding: According to the plans page, tools such as Antigravity, Jules and AI Studio have limited usage on Plus and expanded usage on Pro.

Gmail, Docs, family and age limit

Gemini in Google apps: With Plus, Gemini helps in Gmail according to Google; the plans page names proofreading. Google only lists support in Google Docs and Sheets from Pro upwards. Watch the language: according to Google, the Gemini side panel in Gmail works in German, but proofreading so far only in English and Spanish. Some extras, such as the AI inbox and AI overviews in Gmail, only apply in the US according to Google.

Family: According to Google, both plans can be shared with up to five other people. Everyone shares the storage and gets access to AI features such as the Gemini app and Gemini Notebook. In Google Flow the family shares the limits. Some Pro extras, such as YouTube Premium Lite and the developer program, only apply to the person who manages the plan. All family members must live in the same country. The others cannot see your files unless you share them.

Age limit: According to Google, in the European Economic Area, which includes Germany, you may only use the Gemini apps with a Google AI plan from the age of 18. Gemini in Gmail and Deep Research also require you to be 18. According to Google, Gemini Notebook only requires the general minimum age for a Google Account. Our assessment: teenagers in a family group in Germany mainly benefit from the shared storage and hardly from the plan's other AI features.

Agents and trial periods

Agents are AI helpers that complete several steps on their own, for example watching prices or tidying up your inbox.

Google's agent was called Gemini Spark; Google renamed it Task in October 2026, although the German plans page still partly says Spark. According to Google it requires a Pro or Ultra plan; Plus is not enough. In Germany, however, that does not help you: According to Google, Task is available wherever the Gemini apps are, but explicitly not in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria. Auto browse in Chrome, where Gemini operates websites itself, is also only available in the US and India according to Google. If you want Pro for the agents, you should wait.

Trial periods: For Pro, Google mentions a trial period on its plans page, after which 21.99 euros a month are charged automatically. The offer terms give no fixed length; it is shown at checkout. According to the terms, a trial is only for new Google One customers or for an upgrade to more storage. It renews automatically, so you must cancel before it ends to avoid paying. Different limits may apply during a trial. We did not find a general trial for Plus on Google's pages.

According to Google, students and trainees aged 18 and over get Plus free for one year if they redeem the offer by 31 December 2026. Unless you cancel, the plan then renews automatically at a charge, according to Google. The offer page is not clear about which price then applies, so read the terms before you sign up.

Which plan suits whom?

The following assessment is an editorial recommendation based on the providers' information; it is not based on our own quality test.

Plus is enough if you use Gemini for everyday questions, texts and emails, generate an image or short video now and then, and above all need more storage for photos and mail. For 4.99 euros you get 400 GB, twice the free limits and Gemini in Gmail, shareable with your family. Keep in mind: probably from mid-November you can no longer select a Pro model with Plus.

Pro is worth it if you analyse long documents, often use Deep Research or Gemini Notebook, generate videos regularly, want Gemini in Docs and Sheets or need more than 2 TB of storage. Then you get the strongest models, the large context window and 5 TB. The agent feature Task, however, cannot be used in Germany with Pro either.

Google AI Ultra costs from 99.99 euros a month with five times the Pro limits, or 219.99 euros with twenty times, and comes with at least 20 TB of storage. For most private users that is more than they need.

Tip: Start with Plus. According to Google you can switch to Pro at any time if you hit the limits.
