Copilot+ PC vs Mac: which laptop does more with AI?
Neither is clearly ahead: Copilot+ PCs have more unique AI tools such as Recall, Macs more built-in AI help for writing and translating in German. For the Copilot+ label, Microsoft requires an NPU with more than 40 TOPS, 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Apple Intelligence runs on every Mac with an M1 chip or newer and on the MacBook Neo, which manages with just 8 GB of RAM. Some Windows features are restricted in the EU or require English, and in the EU Apple’s new Siri AI works on the Mac only with English language settings. Entry prices in Germany: MacBook Neo from €799, a Copilot+ PC such as the 13-inch Surface Laptop with 16 GB at a €1,249 list price, €970.79 in the Microsoft Store on 18 October 2026.

Our take: Choose a Copilot+ PC if you need Windows programs and want features such as Recall, improved search or webcam effects; make sure it has 16 GB of RAM. Choose a Mac if you already have an iPhone and mainly want help with writing, summarising and translating in German; the MacBook Neo from €799 is an affordable way in. In the EU, Siri AI works on the Mac in English only. Switching systems for the AI alone is hardly worth it.
Minimum specs: what an AI laptop needs
Copilot+ PC: Copilot+ is a Microsoft label for Windows 11 computers. According to Microsoft, a Copilot+ PC needs a processor with an NPU that manages more than 40 trillion operations per second (40 TOPS), plus at least 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage (SSD or UFS). Eligible chips currently include the AMD Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series, Intel Core Ultra 200V and 300V and Snapdragon X. Microsoft states explicitly that a computer with a powerful NPU but less than 16 GB of RAM is not a Copilot+ PC. An example from Microsoft’s own store: the 13-inch Surface Laptop is also sold with 8 GB, but according to Microsoft you only get the Copilot+ features with 16 GB.
Mac: for Apple Intelligence, Apple does not name a minimum TOPS figure but a list of devices. According to Apple, Apple Intelligence runs with macOS 27 on every Mac with an M1 chip or newer and on the MacBook Neo with the A18 Pro chip. All of these Macs have an NPU, which Apple calls the Neural Engine; according to the tech specs, it has 16 cores in the MacBook Neo and the MacBook Air with M5. Apple is less strict about memory than Microsoft: according to Apple, the MacBook Neo has 8 GB and is still on the list. Apple Intelligence takes up to 8 GB of storage, up to 14 GB on Macs with M3 or later and at least 12 GB of memory. Device language and Siri language must also be set to the same supported language.
Our article on NPUs explains what the chip does and whether you need it.
Which AI features you get
Copilot+ PC: among the features available only on Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft lists Recall, Click to Do, improved Windows search, Live Captions with translation, image features in Paint and Photos, and Windows Studio Effects for the webcam. Recall, once you switch it on, saves a screenshot every few seconds so you can later search for things you have seen. Click to Do recognises text and images on screen and suggests actions, such as summarising or rewriting a text. Improved search finds files when you describe what is in them. For images there is Cocreator in Paint, Image Creator and Restyle in Photos, and super resolution, which upscales photos more sharply. According to Microsoft, generative fill in Paint and Relight in Photos run only on Copilot+ PCs with a Snapdragon chip.
Mac: on the Mac, Apple Intelligence brings Writing Tools for proofreading, rewriting and summarising, summaries of mail, messages and notifications, Live Translation in Messages, Phone and FaceTime, Image Playground and Genmoji for images, photo editing such as Clean Up, Extend and Spatial Reframing, and the optional ChatGPT extension. New with macOS 27 are, among other things, smart features in Safari and shortcuts you describe in your own words. On top of that comes the new Siri AI (beta), which answers questions, understands what is on screen and carries out actions in apps.
Our assessment: Apple’s feature list contains no counterpart to Recall. Instead, Apple’s package focuses more on writing, summarising and translating.
What really works in German and in the EU
Copilot+ PC: according to Microsoft, Recall and improved search are optimised for six languages, including German. With Click to Do, the smarter text actions such as summarising and rewriting are available only when the default language is set to English, according to Microsoft. In the European Economic Area, Click to Do also lacks Ask Copilot, visual search with Bing, drafting with Copilot in Word, Teams actions and advanced image actions such as removing backgrounds. According to Microsoft, Live Captions translate from more than 40 languages into English and from 27 languages into Simplified Chinese, but not into German. The image generators Cocreator, Image Creator and Restyle are optimised for English prompts and need a Microsoft account and an internet connection. The agent in Windows Settings, on the other hand, also understands German.
Mac: according to Apple, German is one of the supported languages of Apple Intelligence. Apple explicitly names the new features, such as advanced photo editing, Image Playground updates and the Safari features, as available to users in the EU. Live Translation in Phone and FaceTime supports German. A few features are English-only, such as suggestions in Mail.
According to Apple, Siri AI is not available on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch in the EU. On the Mac you can use it in the EU, but only if device language and Siri language are both set to English, which means switching the whole Mac to English. Siri AI is currently available in English only anyway. According to heise, Apple and the European Commission had still not reached an agreement in early October 2026 that would bring Siri AI to iPhone and iPad as well. Our article on Apple Intelligence in Germany has more details.
Privacy: what stays on the device?
Copilot+ PC: according to Microsoft, Recall is off by default; you have to switch on saving screenshots yourself. The snapshots are stored encrypted on your device, are not shared with Microsoft or third parties, and access is protected with Windows Hello; setting it up requires biometric sign-in with face or fingerprint. You can exclude apps and websites, and a filter for sensitive data such as passwords and credit cards is switched on by default. Recall needs at least 50 GB of free storage and is still a preview. In the European Economic Area you can also export the snapshots and share them with other apps. According to Microsoft, Click to Do analyses the screen locally; the text actions run on the NPU with the small language model Phi Silica. Content only leaves the device when you choose an action such as a web search. Recall, Studio Effects, Live Captions translation and super resolution work without internet, whereas the image generators use Microsoft’s cloud.
Mac: Apple stresses that Apple Intelligence processes a lot directly on the device. For larger tasks Apple uses its own servers called Private Cloud Compute, without making your data accessible to Apple or anyone else, according to Apple. These server-based features, including Siri AI, the smart photo tools and Image Playground, have daily usage limits. The ChatGPT extension is optional.
Our assessment: both manufacturers process a lot locally. The privacy promises are manufacturer claims that we have not checked ourselves. Recall is the most sensitive point because it records a great deal; it matters that it starts switched off.
Prices and battery life in Germany (as of October 2026)
Mac: according to Apple, the MacBook Neo costs from €799 with 8 GB of memory and a 256 GB SSD, €899 with a 512 GB SSD. The MacBook Air with M5 starts at €1,399 with 16 GB of memory and a 512 GB SSD. For battery life, Apple states up to 16 hours of video streaming or 11 hours of wireless web browsing for the MacBook Neo, and up to 18 and 15 hours respectively for the MacBook Air.
Copilot+ PC: many manufacturers make Copilot+ PCs, and prices vary widely. One example is Microsoft’s own 13-inch Surface Laptop (1st Edition) with Snapdragon X Plus, 16 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD: the recommended retail price is €1,249, and on 18 October 2026 the Microsoft Store sold it for €970.79. Microsoft states up to 23 hours of local video playback and up to 16 hours of active web use for it. On its Copilot+ page, Microsoft advertises up to 27 hours of video playback and up to 19 hours of browsing in general; the devices listed there state between 12 and 27 hours.
Our assessment: Apple measures with video streaming in Safari, Microsoft with a locally stored video file for the Surface. The figures are therefore not directly comparable and usually lower in everyday use. Other retailers and manufacturers sell Copilot+ PCs for less or more; check every offer for 16 GB of RAM. Apple also announces that it will offer extended access to its server-based AI features for a fee in future. Apple has not named a price yet.
Software and assessment: which one suits whom
Copilot+ PCs with a Snapdragon chip are Windows computers with an Arm architecture. According to Microsoft, most Windows apps run on them; programs not built for Arm run through the Prism emulator. There are limits, though: drivers must be developed for Arm, otherwise some printers, accessories or programs do not work fully. Games with anti-cheat drivers sometimes do not run, and some antivirus programs cannot be installed. Our assessment: Copilot+ PCs with an AMD or Intel chip are conventional Windows PCs; Microsoft's Arm notes do not apply to them.
The Mac runs Mac programs; Apple explicitly names Microsoft 365 Copilot and Adobe Creative Cloud. Windows programs do not run directly. On its help page for Macs with M1 to M3, Microsoft names two ways: Parallels Desktop with the Arm version of Windows 11, which has limitations including games that use DirectX 12, or a Windows 365 Cloud PC, a subscription for organisations.
Our assessment: a Copilot+ PC suits you if you need Windows programs, value Recall, improved search and webcam effects, or want to choose from a wide range of devices. If you play a lot of games, a model with an AMD or Intel chip avoids the Arm problems mentioned above. A Mac suits you if you already use an iPhone and mainly want help with writing, summarising and translating in German; the MacBook Neo from €799 is an affordable way in. For most people: chatbots like ChatGPT run in the browser on any laptop. The built-in AI is an extra, not a reason to switch systems.
