Is Gemini available in Germany? Features, plans, age limit

Yes, Gemini is allowed and works in Germany: as a free app and at gemini.google.com, with your own Google account if you are 16 or older. Some features are missing here, though, such as most Gemini features in Gmail without a subscription, editing your own videos and Google's AI agents. The Google AI plans cost 4.99 to 219.99 euros a month, but you must be 18 to use Gemini with a plan (as of October 2026). Gemini is not available for supervised child accounts with Family Link in the EU.

Is Gemini available in Germany?

Yes. Gemini is neither banned nor blocked in Germany. Google has offered the chatbot here since July 2023, back then under the name Bard. In February 2024, Google renamed Bard to Gemini and introduced a dedicated app. In Germany, the mobile Gemini app has been available since June 2024.

Today there are two ways to use Gemini: in the browser at gemini.google.com and as an app for Android and the iPhone. According to Google, the web version is available in over 230 countries and territories and the mobile app in over 150 countries. Germany is on both lists, and German is a supported language. For the Android app, your device needs at least Android 9 and 2 GB of RAM, according to Google.

In the browser you can even try some features without signing in. For everything else, and to have your chats saved, you need a Google account. Google names three account types: a personal Google account that you manage yourself, a work account if your employer has enabled Gemini and you are at least 18, or a school account for which the school has turned on the service.

What works in Germany

The basic features are free. You can chat with Gemini, ask questions, have it draft texts or upload photos and documents.

Gemini Live is the conversation mode. You talk to Gemini as if on the phone, can interrupt it and change the subject. If you like, you can show it what you see through the camera or share your screen. According to Google, Gemini Live is only available in the mobile app on phones and tablets, not in the browser. Google does not list a subscription as a requirement.

Gemini creates images with the Nano Banana 2 model. According to Google, you may create images from the minimum age for your own Google account, which is 16 in Germany. Editing existing images is only possible from 18. Without a plan you download images in 1K resolution, with a Google AI plan in 2K.

You can also connect your own Google services to Gemini. According to Google, Gemini can then, for example, find and summarise emails in Gmail, files in Google Drive or appointments in Calendar. This connection is available in all countries where Gemini and Google Workspace are offered, so in Germany too.

What is missing or limited in Germany

Gemini inside Gmail: Without a subscription, Gemini features in personal Gmail accounts are generally only available in the US, according to Google. Google's feature list names one exception: summaries of long email threads are listed for personal accounts worldwide and in German. With a Google AI plan, you can also have emails drafted (Help me write), in German too. Google's information is not fully consistent, though: the plans page lists the AI overview in Gmail for the US only. The new AI inbox is only available in the US and in English, and proofreading only in English. Google lists Gemini help in Google Docs and Sheets as part of the AI Pro and Ultra plans.

Videos: According to Google, you can only create videos with a Google AI plan and only from 18. Uploading your own video and having Gemini edit it is not possible in the European Economic Area, which includes Germany.

Partner services: Many partner apps that Google connects to Gemini only work in the US or a few other countries, for example Instacart and Dropbox (US only) or OpenTable for restaurant bookings (US and UK).

AI agents: Google has since renamed its personal agent Gemini Spark to Task. According to Google, it is available wherever Gemini is, but explicitly not in the European Economic Area. Gemini in Chrome does not list any EU country either, and Google lists auto browse in Chrome only for the US and India. We explain what these agents can do and where they are available on a separate page.

Google does not give a specific reason for the gaps in Europe on its help pages. It only says in general terms that more countries will be added over time in line with local regulations.

What the plans cost

Google sells the extended Gemini features in its Google AI plans. They are only for personal Google accounts and can be cancelled at any time, according to Google. Prices in Germany (as of October 2026):

Google AI Plus costs 4.99 euros a month with 400 GB of storage. Google also lists a version for 9.99 euros with 2 TB. You get about twice the usage limits compared with no plan.

Google AI Pro costs 21.99 euros a month. It includes 5 TB of storage and about four times the limits. Google also advertises its new “frontier model” Gemini 4 Argon. According to the plans page, Argon is available to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in selected countries; Google links to the plans' country list, which includes Germany.

Google AI Ultra comes in two tiers: 99.99 euros a month with 20 TB of storage and 219.99 euros with 30 TB. According to Google, the usage limits are five and twenty times higher than with Pro.

According to Google, each of these plans can be shared with up to five other family members, who then also get access to the AI features. Some limits, for example in Google Flow, are shared by the whole family. Gemini also works without a plan, but with limits: according to Google, the limit depends on how much computing your requests need and refreshes every five hours until you reach your weekly limit.

Note: on the plans page, Google also lists the Gemini Spark agent for AI Pro, which is now called Task. It is not available in Germany, however. Our assessment: for occasional questions and texts, the free version is usually enough.

Age limit: from what age can you use Gemini?

According to Google, you can manage your own Google account in Germany from age 16. From that age you can also use the free Gemini app and Gemini Live.

For younger children, parents can set up a supervised account with Family Link. In many countries Gemini can be enabled for such accounts. In the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, however, the Gemini apps are not available for supervised accounts, according to Google. So with a personal account, there is no Gemini under 16 in Germany.

Some features require you to be 18: according to Google, you can only use a Google AI plan for Gemini in the European Economic Area from 18. Creating videos, editing images and using Gemini with a work account are also only possible from 18.

We have summarised the age limits for ChatGPT, Claude and other chatbots on our AI for parents page.

Privacy in brief

According to Google, your Gemini chats are kept for 18 months by default. In your Gemini activity settings you can choose 3 or 36 months instead, turn off auto-delete or delete chats yourself.

Google also uses the data to improve its services and AI models. Human reviewers, including at service providers, read some of the chats. Reviewed chats are kept separately from your account for up to three years, even if you delete your activity. Google itself therefore advises against entering confidential information.

If you turn off the Keep Activity setting or use a temporary chat, Google says it stores your chats for 72 hours and does not use them for training unless you give feedback. According to its privacy notice, Google does not use your audio recordings, videos and screen shares from Gemini Live to improve its services by default.
