AI for family caregivers: understanding care notices, organising care, protecting data

As a family caregiver, AI can help you understand technical terms in notices from the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) and reports from the Medical Service (Medizinischer Dienst), organise appointments and tasks, and remind you about medication. General chatbots such as ChatGPT are available free of charge, care apps such as Nui are partly free through the care insurance fund, Alexa+ and Gemini for Home are only available in Germany as early-access versions, and the health offer ChatGPT Health is not available in Europe (as of October 2026). Do not upload complete notices or doctors' letters with names, and get free care counselling for decisions.

Where AI helps family caregivers

Caring involves a lot of paperwork and organisation. This is where AI can lighten the load: it explains technical terms in everyday language, summarises long letters, helps you prepare questions for a counselling session or a doctor's appointment, and drafts letters to the insurance fund or the care service.

The Lower Saxony consumer advice centre (Verbraucherzentrale Niedersachsen) draws a clear line: having something explained is well suited to AI. For orientation it should only be used with caution. You should not leave diagnoses or treatment decisions to it, because even convincing-sounding answers can be wrong.

Our assessment: use AI as a patient explainer and writing aid, not as an adviser on benefit entitlements or medication. Free professional advice is available for both.

Understanding notices from the care insurance fund and the Medical Service

After an application for a care grade (Pflegegrad), the Medical Service assesses the person in need of care, and the care insurance fund then sends a notice. According to the Verbraucherzentrale, the assessment report is normally sent with the notice; if it is missing, you should request it. Anyone who thinks the classification is wrong has one month from receiving the notice to lodge an objection. If the notice does not say that you can object, the deadline is one year, according to the Verbraucherzentrale.

A chatbot can help you understand terms in the report or summarise a paragraph in plain language. Only enter the section, without name, address and insurance number. An AI cannot reliably tell you whether an objection has a chance of success.

That is what care counselling is for. According to the Federal Ministry of Health, after an application the care insurance fund must offer you a specific counselling appointment that takes place no later than two weeks after the application is received. Alternatively, you get a voucher for an independent counselling centre that you can also use within those two weeks. Family caregivers also have their own entitlement if the person in need of care agrees. Counselling is also available at a care support centre (Pflegestützpunkt); your care insurance fund can tell you which one is nearest. In addition, the Federal Family Ministry's care helpline (Pflegetelefon) on 030 20 17 91 31 answers questions about organising care, stressful situations and family care leave.

Organising care and medication reminders

Dedicated care apps combine organisation and advice. According to the App Store, the Nui Care app offers an overview of benefits, care plans and checklists, chats with other relatives, help from care experts and AI-supported advice. The app is free to download. According to the App Store, you can try the full range free for 14 days; after that it costs 9.99 euros a month and can be cancelled at any time. AOK Bayern offers its insured members a care app with Nui free of charge; according to AOK, an AI-supported chatbot there provides orientation on benefits and next steps.

For medication there are reminder apps. According to the provider, MyTherapy reminds you about tablets, measurements and doctor's appointments, checks for interactions, keeps a health diary and creates a medication plan for doctor's visits; according to the provider, the app is free. The manufacturer now also describes a built-in AI assistant called Mighty for MyTherapy; whether the reminders themselves use AI is unclear.

ChatGPT Health, a separate area from OpenAI for connecting health data and apps, is, according to OpenAI, currently only rolling out in the USA, for adults aged 18 and over on the web and on the iPhone. You cannot use it in Germany.

Voice assistants: Alexa+ and Gemini for Home

A voice assistant can help in everyday life, for example when the person being cared for struggles with a mobile phone. Alexa+ has been available in Germany as early access since 7 May 2026 and, according to Amazon, costs nothing during this phase. Afterwards, Alexa+ is to be included at no extra cost for Prime members and to cost 22.99 euros a month without Prime. Amazon gives adding appointments to the calendar as an example.

According to heise, Google also launched Gemini for Home in Germany as early access in June 2026; activation is via the Google Home app. According to Google, the basic version with the Gemini voice assistant is available without a subscription, and the Google Home Premium subscription costs 10 or 18 euros a month.

Our assessment: both assistants are still being rolled out gradually. Do not rely on a voice assistant alone for vital medication; also use an alarm clock, a pill organiser or the care service.

Protecting health data

Under Article 9 GDPR, health data belongs to the specially protected categories of data, explains the Stiftung Datenschutz (German Foundation for Data Protection). Processing it is prohibited in principle unless an exception applies, such as explicit consent. When you act for another person, it is their data, not yours.

The Verbraucherzentrale Niedersachsen advises against uploading complete personal test results, doctors' letters or medication plans to chatbots. Ask yourself beforehand what the AI really needs to know, and, for example, only have a single technical term explained.

With ChatGPT, OpenAI may use content from personal accounts for training by default. According to OpenAI, this can be switched off in the settings under data controls, and temporary chats are not used for training while they remain temporary. With care apps, it is worth reading the privacy notice before you store documents of the person being cared for there.
