AI for small shops: product texts, photos, customer chat and the law

Small shops mainly use AI for product descriptions, cut-out product photos, social media posts and quick answers to customer questions. Many tools are free or already built into the shop system, such as Shopify Magic from the Basic plan at 27 euros a month billed annually, and Photoroom Pro costs 5.99 euros a month billed annually (as of October 2026). Product images must show what you actually deliver, otherwise you risk legal warning letters, and an AI customer chat must identify itself as AI.

Where AI helps in a small shop today

For small retailers, the quickest gains are in routine desk work: product texts for the online shop or eBay, photos with a clean background, posts for Instagram or Facebook and answers to frequent customer questions.

For texts and posts, a free chatbot such as ChatGPT or Gemini is often enough. According to Notebookcheck, ChatGPT Go costs 8 euros and Plus 23 euros a month, and according to Google, Google AI Pro costs 21.99 euros a month.

Free help getting started is offered by the Mittelstand-Digital Centre for Retail, run by the German Retail Federation (HDE) together with partners. According to Lebensmittelpraxis, its funding runs until 31 December 2026, with a focus on AI, free online events, consultation hours and AI trainers at sites in Berlin, Cologne, Regensburg and Saarbrücken.

Product descriptions: Shopify and eBay

If you sell with Shopify, you will find a button for generating text in the product form. According to Shopify's help pages, Shopify Magic creates a suggestion from the product title and bullet points in the language of your input, including German. According to Shopify, the feature is included at no extra cost in paid plans. According to the German pricing page, the Basic plan costs 27 euros a month billed annually or 36 euros billed monthly; it does not say whether VAT is included.

In March 2025, eBay introduced an AI tool in its app in Germany: one photo is enough, and the AI recognises product details and suggests a category and item specifics. This was aimed at private sellers. According to its press release, eBay presented a feature for business sellers that lets you upload many photos at once and receive drafts. In spring 2026, eBay could not yet say in its community when the single-photo tool would come to business sellers in Germany.

Our assessment: an AI text is a draft. You must check dimensions, material, care instructions and contents yourself, because an incorrect description is your responsibility as the seller.

Product photos: cut-outs yes, embellishment no

AI can remove the background of a phone photo or replace it with a plain colour. In Shopify, according to its help pages, this works directly in the media editor with Shopify Magic. According to its pricing page, Photoroom's Pro plan includes a background remover, retouching and AI backgrounds for 5.99 euros a month billed annually, including VAT; the Shopify integration only comes with higher plans.

Legally important: according to German law firm IT-Recht Kanzlei, courts treat product images as part of the agreed characteristics of the goods. If an image shows more accessories, a different colour or a different shape than what is delivered, you risk a warning letter for misleading advertising under the German Unfair Competition Act (UWG), and in the firm's view notes such as 'image similar' are not enough. Since 2 August 2026, certain AI-generated images that look real must also be labelled as AI-generated; the firm advises labelling AI images when in doubt.

Copyright matters too: the Händlerbund retail association reports a warning letter against a retailer who had used AI images from a platform advertised as royalty-free without sufficient usage rights.

Customer chat via WhatsApp and on the website

In June 2026, Meta presented Meta Business Agent, an AI that answers customer questions in WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, recommends products from the catalogue and books appointments. According to Meta, it is free each month up to an included allowance, and more responses are available through Meta One plans; features and availability depend on region, app and account. TechCrunch reported a global launch, but WhatsApp's help pages say the feature is currently only available in some countries for selected businesses. Whether you can use it in Germany can only be seen in your own WhatsApp Business app.

Whatever the tool: since 2 August 2026, a chatbot that writes directly to customers must, according to the European Commission, make clear from the start that it is an AI, unless this is obvious.

Our assessment: only let a chatbot answer questions whose answers you have defined in advance, such as opening hours, shipping and returns. Price promises, discounts and complaints stay with you.

Customer data and data protection

The German data protection conference, made up of the supervisory authorities, recommends company accounts rather than private ones for professional use of AI, with training on inputs switched off. Anyone using an external provider's AI with personal data usually needs a data processing agreement.

In practice: product texts and social media posts do not need any customer data. Without personal details, the data protection risk drops considerably. According to the data protection conference, these include not only names and addresses but also details through which someone can be identified indirectly, as well as data about your employees. Still check your account settings, for example whether your inputs are used for training. Do not copy orders with names and addresses or customer emails including signatures into a general chatbot. The data protection conference also points out that AI results make no claim to be correct, so always double-check advertising claims written by the AI.
