Le Chat vs ChatGPT: how good is Mistral's European alternative (now Vibe)?
Mistral's chatbot Le Chat has been called Vibe since 28 May 2026 and is still available at the same address. The paid Pro tier costs 14.99 euros a month plus VAT; for Germany Mistral shows 17.84 euros including tax, while ChatGPT Plus costs 23 euros (as of October 2026). Mistral says it stores data in the EU by default, which is the provider's own claim. Our take: Choose Le Chat, now Vibe, if a European provider with EU storage by its own account matters to you; Pro is cheaper than ChatGPT Plus. Choose ChatGPT if you need features such as video chats, Codex or ChatGPT Work. Both offer Deep Research. This is a limited editorial view, not our own test. For everyday questions, the free versions of both are sufficient.
First of all: Le Chat is now called Vibe
Mistral AI is an AI company from France. Its chatbot Le Chat was renamed Vibe on 28 May 2026. According to Mistral, your account, plan and all previous conversations move over automatically, and the address and login stay the same. Vibe has three modes: Vibe Chat is the classic chat known from Le Chat, Vibe Work carries out multi-step tasks across connected apps, and Vibe Code is a programming tool.
The Decoder describes the rebrand as Mistral competing more directly with the agent offerings of OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. For you as a private user, the main everyday change is the name. Many people still search for Le Chat, so this page uses both names.
Prices in euros (as of October 2026)
Mistral: the free tier costs nothing and offers limited messages and web searches. According to the pricing page, Pro costs 14.99 euros a month excluding tax. If you select Germany and the view including tax on the pricing page, 17.84 euros appears. Students get Pro at a discount. The Team plan is 24.99 euros per person per month excluding tax. The Decoder confirms these net prices and notes that Mistral adds tax on top.
ChatGPT: opened from Germany, the German pricing page shows 0 euros for Free, 8 euros for Go, 23 euros for Plus and from 103 euros for Pro. It does not say explicitly whether these amounts include VAT.
Comparing final prices, Mistral Pro is somewhat cheaper than ChatGPT Plus and clearly more expensive than ChatGPT Go. The amount shown at checkout is what counts.
Features and limits
According to Mistral, Vibe offers chat, web search, Deep Research, voice mode, image generation, documents and libraries, scheduled tasks, connections to other services, spreadsheets and slides, and the programming tool, on the web and as an app. According to the pricing page, Pro allows up to six times as many messages, five times as many web searches and forty times as many images as the free tier. Mistral mostly gives no fixed numbers, as The Decoder points out explicitly.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT offers chat and web search plus voice and video chats, Deep Research, Codex and ChatGPT Work, but the strongest models only from Plus upwards. According to OpenAI, ads may appear on the Free and Go plans, and OpenAI is rolling them out gradually to eligible accounts. Accounts identified as belonging to minors get no ads. Plus and Pro are ad-free. OpenAI also names a free option without ads, with fewer messages per day and no tools such as images; availability may vary by region.
Both share, among other things, web search, voice mode, images and Deep Research. ChatGPT also offers video chats, while Vibe has its own areas for multi-step tasks and programming in Vibe Work and Vibe Code.
Our assessment, as a limited editorial view without our own test: the feature lists do not show a clear overall winner. For everyday tasks such as letters, explanations and summaries, both are sufficient.
Privacy: what lies behind the EU promises
Mistral says it stores your data in the European Union by default. Depending on the feature, however, Mistral says data may be transferred temporarily to service providers outside the EU. For this, Mistral says it uses the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. These are the provider's own statements; no independent audit was available for this page.
Training: according to Mistral, Vibe users are not opted out of training by default but can opt out at any time. Uploaded documents count as input. The pricing table explicitly lists the opt-out from Pro upwards; for the free tier it is not clear there.
ChatGPT: here too you can switch off training in Data controls. According to OpenAI's pricing page, data storage in the EU is only available on business plans, not on Free, Go, Plus or Pro. Free and Go also show ads, which OpenAI says are not personalised in the EEA for now.
Quality: what independent tests say
In a test by the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland for the Swiss consumer programme Kassensturz on SRF, Le Chat scored 4.6 and ranked ahead of ChatGPT at 4.1. The scale goes up to 6; more than 300 questions on everyday life, knowledge, law and health were tested using the free versions. The test ran in autumn 2025, and both providers have updated their models since. Some of the questions had a Swiss focus.
Our assessment: a single test with older models says little about what works better today. It does show that Le Chat does not perform fundamentally worse on everyday questions. For both: answers can be wrong and should be checked on important topics.
The recommendation on this page is an editorial assessment. Le Chat, now Vibe, fits if a European provider and a lower price matter to you. ChatGPT fits if you want features such as video chats, Codex or ChatGPT Work.
