Create AI images for free: your first image with ChatGPT, Gemini or Firefly
ChatGPT, Gemini and Adobe Firefly let you create AI images for free, with usage limits on all three. Try a simple birthday card as your first project.
Explanations like this by email, regularly – start for free ↓
Start for free without taking out a subscription
According to their help and product pages, ChatGPT, Gemini and Adobe Firefly offer free image generation (checked on 19 October 2026). Free means limited usage, not unlimited images. A free account is also different from a paid subscription or a trial of one.
Our recommendation: use the service where you already have an account for your first attempt. Sign in at chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com or firefly.adobe.com. Gemini requires a Google account; Firefly needs an Adobe ID, which you can create for free. Choose free access for this exercise; you do not need to accept an offer for a paid plan. This guide is for adults.
Describe a birthday card
Start with a simple subject. Our example needs neither a photograph nor personal information. Describe what should appear, the style you want and where space should remain for your greeting. This description is often called a prompt.
Editorial example, not a tested result: “Create an image for a portrait-format birthday card: a small birthday cake with three candles on a garden table, with colourful flowers in the background. Friendly watercolour style, light colours. Leave plenty of empty space at the top for a greeting, but do not put any text in the image.”
Our suggestion: add the personal greeting yourself later in a program you already use, or write it by hand on the printout. This gives you control over spelling, names and dates.
How to start with each service
ChatGPT: OpenAI says the free tier supports creating images. Enter the example description as a request for an image. Image generation has its own usage limit, separate from other features.
Gemini: Google describes starting on a computer at gemini.google.com, using “Images” in the sidebar. Enter your description there. Image generation is included without a Google AI subscription. Availability depends on factors including country, language and account.
Firefly: sign in at firefly.adobe.com and choose “Text to Image”, as described by Adobe. Enter your description there. Free access includes a limited selection of models and features. You do not need to compare models for your first attempt: stay with an option available in the free offering.
Edit and save an image: the Gemini example
Google documents how to edit an image created in Gemini. Open it in the media library, choose “Chat” beneath it and describe your desired change. Editorial example: “Make the background less busy and leave more empty space at the top. Keep the cake.” This is an exercise instruction; we have not tested this image generation ourselves.
Check afterwards that the parts you wanted to keep are still there. Pay particular attention to the number of candles and the space for your greeting. Our suggestion: request one change at a time so that you can judge what changed more easily.
For downloading on a computer, Google says to hover over the image and choose “Download full size”. According to Google, downloads are available at 1K resolution without a subscription and 2K with a Google AI subscription. Check whether that is enough at your intended printed card size. These steps apply to Gemini; other services may have different controls.
What happens when you reach the free limit?
OpenAI does not specify a fixed number of daily images in its free-tier help page. Once you reach the image limit, you need to wait until access becomes available again. Google also describes changing usage limits and shows in the product when you can use it again. A refused additional attempt therefore does not necessarily mean you did something wrong.
Adobe describes limited daily generations that renew each day on its Firefly plans page and in the dedicated free-user section of its help. Other passages still refer to monthly free credits. The information is therefore not fully consistent; we do not promise a fixed image allowance. Check the message in your account before your next attempt.
Our recommendation: wait first when you reach a limit. Consider a subscription only if you regularly want to create more. The manufacturers’ information establishes features and limits, not a quality ranking between these three services.
Check before sending
Look closely at the image: are objects duplicated, shapes odd or unwanted letters visible? An attractive preview does not guarantee a flawless result. For your birthday card, you can choose another draft or ask for distracting details to be changed.
Use invented subjects for your first attempt. Google points out that other people’s copyright and privacy rights still need to be respected when creating AI images, and that results should be checked before use. Free generation is not blanket permission to use any subject in any way. This example needs no other people’s photographs, logos or well-known characters.
